Frequently Asked Questions

  • What will I do as a volunteer?

There are various ways to volunteer with us. For example, you can volunteer by directly supporting individuals with mental health problems, either one-to-one or in a group setting. If you are a trained counsellor, you could also provide counselling sessions to our service users. You can also become a media volunteer and share your story to raise awareness of mental health issues and challenge attitudes.

  • I don't have much time, can I still volunteer?

Yes. Our volunteer roles offer flexibility, allowing you to balance your commitments. While some roles may specify a minimum number of hours per week, we understand that you have other obligations. We strive to accommodate your schedule to make volunteering accessible. For roles involving support for individuals living with mental illness, we recommend a commitment of at least six months.

  • How old do I need to be to volunteer?

To volunteer with Active Minds, you must be 18 or older. There is no upper age limit for our volunteers. Unfortunately, we do not provide volunteer opportunities for individuals under 18.

  • Will volunteering cost me anything?

No, volunteering will not cost you anything. We will reimburse reasonable and agreed out-of-pocket expenses while you volunteer with us, such as travel, meals and other relevant costs.

  • Will I need a criminal record check?

To provide one-on-one or group support for a person living with mental illness, you will need a criminal record check. Other volunteer roles do not require a criminal record check. If your role necessitates one, we will discuss it with you. Criminal records checks are free for volunteers,

  • Will I have to attend an interview?

Most of our volunteer roles require you to attend an informal discussion. This serves as an opportunity for our Volunteer Manager to learn more about you and your interests, and it’s a chance for you to ask questions to determine if the role is the right fit for you.

  • What training will I receive as a volunteer?

You’ll receive an induction with the team you’ll be volunteering with. Depending on your specific role, you may also have the opportunity for additional training, tailored to your needs and aspirations, which will be thoughtfully discussed with you to ensure you’re well-prepared to make a meaningful impact in your volunteer role.

  • Can you provide me with a reference?

Absolutely. You have the option to request a reference when concluding your volunteering journey or even sooner if necessary. We will provide a reference detailing your volunteering timeline and outlining the valuable contributions you made during your time with us, ensuring you’re well-equipped for your next chapter.
